THIS BREWERY IS the baby of the business partners behind St. Augustine’s, one of Vancouver’s best taphouses that is second only to the Alibi Room in beer selection. Running that popular Commercial Drive eatery was ideal market research for Parallel 49, which hit the ground running hard when it opened in the spring of 2012 and hasn’t looked back since.

To set up and run this brewery, Parallel 49’s owners hired Graham With, a local star homebrewer with an engineering degree from UBC. They immediately flew to China with him to complete the purchase of their brewhouse equipment. With the boom in craft brewing across North America, it can take years to get new equipment from North American builders, and even with the distance and shipping costs, a brewhouse built in China costs far less than one built here.

The equipment arrived on With’s thirtieth birthday, but unfortunately, the two Chinese engineers who were supposed to accompany it did not—they had not been granted visas by Canadian officials. After enlisting the aid of a local MP, the Parallel 49 partners finally got the help they needed and started brewing their first batches of beer on Easter weekend, 2012.

This big brewery was built from scratch and designed to pump out a lot of beer, so Parallel 49 is obviously planning to be a major player in the market. They’ve adopted a fun, cartoony branding style, and so far, at least, they’ve chosen beer styles that are a mix of old school fundamentals—such as Old Boy, a brown ale—and cutting-edge experimentation. One of their core brands is an India Pale Lager, and their first summer seasonal was a watermelon wit, which is unique in B.C. Initially, there was no hoppy IPA in sight even though that is the flagship style for most West Coast craft breweries, but With said he was waiting to get the right hops before he finally released the cheekily named Lord of the Hops early in 2013.

Parallel 49 has bombarded the market with excellent limited releases in 650 mL bombers over its first year in business, including: Lost Souls Chocolate Pumpkin Porter, Salty Scot (a sea-salted caramel scotch ale), Black Christmas CDA, Vow of Silence (a Belgian Trappist-style quadrupel), and a Russian Imperial Stout.
